Introduction

I am a bookworm and read in a diverse market but for some reason don’t enjoy books that involve mystery and crime investigations. I use to believe that the authors of this particular genre are very technical with their explicit use of technical terms that confuses the readers.

“The Plain Truth” by Jodi Picoult has changed everything in the way I treat books that involve crime and mystery.

“The Plain Truth” is the story about a young 18-year-old unmarried Amish woman, who has been charged with murdering her own baby. As the police investigate the death, they discover that the baby was not stillborn, but died shortly after birth.Katie Fisher, the young 18-year-old unmarried Amish women is suspected to have murdered her newborn baby. By the way, Amish are a religious group who live apart from the rest of the world eschewing such things as electricity, automobiles, and telephones and following very strict church teachings.

How I felt about the story

The story is very deeply engaging. I felt sorry for Katie as she is young and fragile. But then again why would she suffocate her own baby possibly by stuffing cloth fibers into the mouth of her own flesh and blood (baby) in a very barbaric act. Her relative and defense lawyer Ellie tries to defend her but then again there is the issue of cultural clash. The justice channels of Amish and that Ellie follows clash and she is caught in the middle. The story is absolutely compelling and when I started reading it, I couldn’t even drop it to get back to my studies. I was in university that time in 2008. This tangled murder mystery is unraveled slowly in the story, but there is so much more to it. It is a fascinating depiction of Amish life, involving psychological drama and courtroom suspense, and explores "the bonds of love, friendship, and the heart's most complex choices.

Who can read this book?

The book is for those who can stand murder and crime investigation and enjoy a bit of psychological drama and courtroom suspense.

About The Author

Picoult is a brilliant author who knows pretty well how to lift her readers up and keep them flying with her until the last page of the book is reached. So many drama and so much entertainment. Again the book is also educational as I learnt a bit about Amish culture which I never would have known if I haven’t read this novel.

Recommendation

I have enjoyed the book and therefore I highly recommend this book to any one who wants to read it.
