“Job Search”

Obviously, the question “how to get a job quickly” is found in the minds of most fresh college graduates. But if you want to get a job quickly, you have you have to work to get it. Numerous sites rave endlessly about job promotions which tend to be secondary methods and short lived. How fast do you want a job? Let’s get real here while I show you nine keys steps to tackle this problem

KEY STEP # 1: KNOW YOURSELF

How well do you know yourself? Do you know your talents, skills, strengths and weaknesses?. Your self-knowledge can be used to efficiently and cost-effectively attain the visions, missions of your employer. This is what makes your marketable. Not just your degree. Write down your goals, dreams and ambitions and keep them in a spot you can read them often as a reminder. Invent a short affirmation about your career goals. This gives you a road map to success. If know yourself better and match your skills with the right employer, you will stand a better chance of being hired.

Here’s how I normally do my self evaluation in the company I apply for;

· Who am I tells me about my origin. Whether I am African, Australian, American etc.

· Why will I work for this company tells me of my dreams or goals in life.

· Where will I fit in the company tells me the niche or the position I can hold in the company.

· How will I relate to others in the company tells me about my attitude towards those whom I will work with.

KEY STEP # 2: RESEARCH YOUR POTENTIAL EMPLOYER

Your potential employer like any other organizations has its own guiding principles upon which it bases all its actions and decisions. It has its;

· Mission

· Vision &

· Values

The mission normally declares a company’s purpose of existence serves as the standard against which all its actions and decisions are weighed.

The vision normally serves as the framework for a company’s road map and guides every aspect of its business by what is needed to be accomplished to continue achieving sustainable, quality growth.

Values serve as a compass for a company’s actions and describe how the company behaves in the world.

Align your applications with your potential employer’s missions, vision and goals. Go astray from your employer’s mission, vision and values and you never get noticed. Remember, there are many of you fighting for the same thing. Do what they want and you get noticed for a job or even a promotion soon.

KEY STEP # 3: KNOW THE ATTITUDE OF THE EXISTING STAFF

I have to include this here because it’s an area many often neglect resulting in them not being hired. What type of people work in that company you are applying for? What are their backgrounds and their needs and wants?

Abraham Maslow (1908-1970) created his now famous Hierarchy of Needs categorizing the human needs under to broad categories, “Psychological and Physical”

Whichever way possible, the basic the physiological needs of all workers including yourself should be met. Breathing, food, water, sex, homeostasis, excretion are vital needs ever human has. Once the physiological needs are met, then safety, love/belonging, esteem and self-actualization needs can be easily met.

Why is it necessary here? Companies that have high staff stability rarely look outside to recruit. They build their staff from within. How would you know? Simply research the attitude of their staff. Are the needs and wants of the staff met satisfactory? Is the staffing in the company stable? Remember your drive is to at least land a job be it good or bad and build from there. A job opening is all you need. So if their high staff instability in a company, why not give a try. You can be lucky.

KEY STEP # 4: COMMUNICATION

People become successful because they are able to communicate well and get results. Be it in writing or speaking. You want to be precise, timely and be marketable with good communication techniques. Mastering the skills of effective communication is not as easy as it may sound. But it can be leant. I find it helpful to ask myself the following questions

· What am I communicating?

· Why am I communicating?

· What result do I expect to get?

Writing a convincing cover letter and resume is not all you need. You should know what you are writing for and to whom and what results you expect. This is the art of good communication. Simple as they may seem but if you cannot answer these three questions properly, then it means you don’t know what you are doing and your chances of failure is very high. Keep a diary to keep track of your communication skills so that you keep improving every time you communicate

KEY STEP # 5: SELF DISCIPLINE

As Stephen R. Covey once wrote, “the undisciplined are slaves to moods, appetites and passions”. Self discipline is the key your success in career and even other areas of life like finance, relationship etc. As they say: "If you don't stand for something you will fall for anything!”. So hold onto discipline and you will land a job quickly. Searching for job is not an easy task. Do your research about potential employers, devise a job application campaign and stick to it. Don't procrastinate. You are only fooling yourself if you do. Apply only to those companies whose criteria strongly meet your qualification. Why? You have better chance of being hired.

1. Self-Knowledge

Go back to Key Step # 1. You have to know yourself and how your career goals align with vision, mission and values of your employer. Never go astray because if you do, you won’t be recognized.

2. Conscious Awareness

Embark on your journey with your career goals in mind. Every time you do something, ask yourself “Will the results of this action help me get hired?

3. Commitment to Self-Discipline

If you say you gona do it, do it! There’s no easier way to be successful then to do it!

4. Courage

Have the courage to say yes or no when it is appropriate. When you have the courage to stand up for what is right, your colleagues and even your potential employer will value you as someone of importance and not just a worker.

5. Use Positive Affirmations

Use positive affirmations to internalize what you plan to achieve in your career.

KEY STEP # 6: PLANNING

"He who fails to plan is planning to fail"

Winston Churchill

Winston Churchill made this quote during world war two. But it still hold true today in every aspect of human life. Planning is an integral part of management. It is like a road map that shows you what you want to do, how you want to do it and when you want to complete the tasks. If you are serious with to get a job, plan well before you set out to hunt for job. This will maximize your success rate.

KEY STEP # 7: SEEK HELP

Is your writing and speaking good? Can you write a better resume and cover letter? If not, seek help. No man is an island. People are willing to help only if you ask.

KEY STEP # 8: EVALUATE YOUR SUCCESS

After getting your responses from potential employers, evaluate your application. Those that were successful and those that were not. What have you done wrong for the employer to turn down your application? There will always be a reason for that. Try and find out and this will guide you in the future if you are looking for job again.
